False promises, misinformation, fads, opinions—there is no shortage when it comes to health, fitness, and diet.  Linked with convincing  negative thoughts the perfect excuse to do nothing takes root and gives disease fertile ground.

I am discouraged and frustrated that friends and family, unhealthy, in pain, overweight, and dying will not listen and act on information about food’s impact on their lives.  An uncle with MS, a sick overweight aunt, a sister with multiple health issues—WILL NOT LISTEN!

It is not easy to learn about nutrition or to learn how to prepare foods properly.  I get it.  I even volunteered to live-in for a week, to be a diet buddy, I created this blog and load great plant based recipes on Pinterest.  My family will not read my blogs.

However, I carry a torch for Dr. Fuhrman whose link is in this post. Kimberly Snyder’s Beauty Detox Solution is my health foundation and I want to at least try to tell people about what I know works.

Do you want a solution or are you making excuses?

To your health,

Claudia

Life after 60!

Employment after age sixty is challenging and hard not to believe discrimination is a factor, but today I got confirmation it is alive and well. I attended a required Maryland seminar; not attending threatened certain denial of unemployment benefits. I prepared my forms and documented my job search as instructed and went to the address provided. It was the wrong address, leaving 10-20 people nervously clamoring to get to the correct location. After paying for parking at one location I had problems with the magnetic strip on my debit card and could not pay again and towing was enforced. Good Samaritans pooled dimes and quarters and paid my due just in time for me to sit in on the first half required lecture. During the break, staff asked if anyone was over sixty, which I am. I took my two inches of documentation, Excel spreadsheet, and colorful printouts to the messenger where I was given a waiver. If one is over sixty the state of Maryland does not require job search to collect UI benefits. I can only assume the state knows discrimination is real, laws cannot protect seniors, and we are too old to hire. So what is the use of trying? Until now I never felt old and in our society I wonder if it is downhill from here. So, I am going to cry a few tears of indignation and when I come back, burn that damn waiver!

STRESS

Stress is a killer.  Stress attacks the body, heart, and soul over and over until we die. I was her victim most of my life, yet on the outside, I maintained  healthy but fluctuating body weight and youthful skin.  I attribute that to genes and not my diet or regiment or healthcare.  Then, I hit my fifties and over the past decade, I saw and felt Stress’  impact on my life.  My skin did not glow, my eyes were dull, and I felt tired and haggard.

I tried different things to counteract stress, including drinking wine, exercising sometimes, and avoiding certain foods.  It was not until I embraced healthy food and exercise as Healers that I started reversing Stress’ damage.  Although much stress was relieved when I stopped working, I gained new stresses and still had to deal with the battered condition of my health.

Each of us can make a decision to ignore our health, get fat, loose our muscles, and we can call it retirement, but at some point someone will have to take care of us because we did not take care of ourselves.  But why do we want to be on medication, have surgery, have heart attacks, fall, break bones, and look old?  Yet, so many of us choose that path when there is so much guidance and assistance and information available to us.

I look at some of my followers’ profiles and I know some are seeking information and others want to be a resource and this is just one woman’s small blog!  There are so many resources!  Stress does not need to win this battle, we are better that that!  Reach out and get informed, make a decision, get a trainer if you can, hook up with a nutionalist if you can, but DO SOMETHING positive to live a happier healthier life.

Whatever you do today is a choice, why not make it a good one?

Take care,

Carecia

Subtle Changes

Good morning!  I hope your health is showing subtle changes since you embarked on your fitness journey and for those who follow just to see yummy recipes I find interesting, I hope you all enjoy and share some of your revisions, experiences, and/or opinions.

My personal journey continues to amaze me and hubby as we take turns spinning each other around to admire the changes in our bodies; those changes are what we call a side effect from being healthier.  I measure healthy a couple of ways, how I feel and how I look.  As for Hubby, he was taking high blood pressure medicine, and he is no longer taking it.  He is pain free from his autoimmune disease and soon to be medication free. He feels better than he can ever remember feeling!  That is a strong statement, but he is not one to exaggerate!  He has not started working out, but I hope to get him in the gym today.

I have had the biggest struggle between the two of us for reasons I discussed earlier, but the results are in and I am pleasantly surprised.  I work out about 5 days a week and I want to.  That is crucial for me.  I enjoy our gym and the pool and the sauna, but I really love fulfilling a lifetime desire to be a swimmer.  I am up to 12 laps from about 4 and I know I will soon swim a full hour instead of 30 minutes.  I feel good.  A fog is lifting and my mind is clearer than it has been in the past decade.  I like myself and the skin I am in, and that says a lot.

Now more than ever, I want to give this gift away and share it with others whose life is heading towards a rapid finale, hospital admissions, and mobility restrictions.  We are capable of so much more and we owe it to ourselves to remain independent.

Be inspired,

Carecia

Starting over

My brain contains data of useless information along with 45 years of recipes.  Starting over and re-thinking food, learning what to eat, what not to eat, and then how to prepare foods raw, minimally cooked, or how to combine foods correctly is a major undertaking.  I took home economics classes throughout high school, lived with some of the best cooks of the day, and was head cook in my orphanage dorm when I was 15 years old.  So, why didn’t someone teach me I was doing it all wrong?

Most of my time now is spent learning what to eat, what to buy, how to combine foods, and how to prepare them.  I have to say, clean up is easier than scraping burned meat from a roasting pan, scrubbing a pot after making mashed potatoes, or discarding grease after frying something!  Knives, cutting boards, blender, and storage containers are my new allies in my vegan campaign.

Learning not to count anything, calories or carbs, is like a new lease on life.  Oh, eating the most beautiful mousse made from beets and coconut milk is just one treat that made me feel guilty, but pounds are falling off every day for me and hubby.  I am not dieting and have no intention of doing so ever again, but I am focused on being healthy, looking healthy, and having energy; weight loss is just a natural side-effect.

Working out is no longer a chore, but a treat.  I am beginning to feel cheated if I cannot go to the gym everyday,  For me aquatics is the therapy I need for what I believe could be pain I could not cope with.

Yeah, I am really loving life!

Blessings,

Carecia

Be Prepared

Maintenance Day at the auto dealer revealed more to me about taking care of myself.  The plan that day was to take the old car in and get a loaner and return home, instead, I was there all day with no food.  My old car was so far gone, I traded her in for a new one.

I arrived at 9:00 am after drinking my GGS (Kimberly Snyder) and once at the dealership, I drank a cup of coffee with non-dairy cream (what is that stuff?).  Around 10:30 a.m. I ate an apple provided in the guest lounge (nice dealership!).   By 2:00 p.m. I turned ice cold and felt shaky and asked for food; the sales person bought me a bag of salty, greasy peanuts which I greedily woofed down.  My body turned warm and I thought everything was good, but in less than an hour I had a headache and stomach ache.  The rest of my day was shot.

Moral to the story, be prepared.  Eating well and regularly seems to condition the body to expect excellence.  It is a little like driving a luxury automobile and trading her in for hybrid, I know I expect more from my new little car than she can deliver, just as my body expected more from its nutrition than I could deliver because I was not prepared.

Enjoy!

Maintenance

Wow!  I learned more than I ever wanted to know about maintenance while visiting my auto dealership.  My car has 130,000 miles after ten years of minimum maintenance and the Service Tech had to refrain from saying, “I told you so”.  My maintenance expense was $3,000 to replace brakes, sludge in the brake fluid, power steering fluid, oil pan, battery and more! The condition of my old faithful and fully paid car was so bad, I had to trade her in.

I guess if my car has 130,000 miles on her after 10 years, I must have 780,000 miles after 60 years; a cliche comes to mind, “rode hard and put up wet”!  Kimberly Snyder speaks of sludge during detox and I am grateful I have not been traded in for a new model, but have a wonderful opportunity to get the maintenance I need! (I promise to treat my new Hybrid better, too!)

Forge ahead!
